Reviews– According to Brother, MFC-685cw is basically a superset of the new generation of well-MFC-465cn, adding Wi-Fi; larger, 3.3-inch color LCD for previewing photos; and a telephone handset and answering machine. All comments in this review about other features should apply to both models.

MFC-685cw features list is long. Print, scan, and works as a copier and a fax machine independent. It also prints directly from memory cards, PictBridge cameras, and USB keys. Connection options include wired network connection and Wi-Fi, and can fax from and scan to a PC via a network. Finally, in what is a very welcome touch, it includes a 10-page automatic document feeder (ADF) for easy scanning, faxing and copying multipage documents.

Like the previous-generation models from Brother-including, for example, MFC-440cn that the MFC-465cn replace paper handling on the skimpy side, with a capacity of 100 page input tray plus a 20-page spread for 4- by-6 photo paper.

This low capacity is a big part of what limits the MFC-685cw for lightweight printing. My rule is to avoid the need to add paper more than once a week. Doing so with this AIO will translate to print no more than 20 pages per day on average, including faxes and copies. On the other hand, the photo tray extra help making MFC-685cw fits nicely into the dual role of home and home office printer, because you can switch to printing photos without having to swap out the plain paper.

Find a place for MFC-685cw easy, thanks to the small size (7.1 by 18.4 by 14.6 inches, HWD). Setting up the wired network is standard fare. Simply set the AIO in place, install the four ink cartridges, load paper, plug in the network cable, and run the automated installation routine. (I tested it using Windows XP, but Vista driver package included as well.)
